This "French" watercolour brush by da Vinci has particularly absorbent squirrel hairs which makes it ideal for all watercolour techinques; this includes being especially great for large-area glazing (washing). The fine squirrel hairs can take up surprisingly large amounts of liquid and then slowly release it back on to your painting substrate. This feature predestined this shapely brush for use in silk painting, calligraphy and for beginning watercolour painters. Squirrel hairs come from the tails of Canadian and Russian (Siberian) squirrels - they are not as elastic and durable as the Kolinsky red sable hairs but do have the ability to take up and store large amounts of liquid: for this reason they are often found in so-called "mops" brushes (washing) whereby this feature is put to its best use. The highest quality squirrel hairs are the blue and Kazan versions.
