Sumi-E is the Japanese word for Black Ink Painting, which is based on Chinese callligraphy, a technique brought to Japan by Zen monks in the 12th century. With quick powerful strokes of a brush that are seemingly just dashed off, the essence of a motif is to be captured - for this reason the Asian painting technique also serves as a spiritual relaxation therapy. The translation of "Sumi" is "black ink" while "E" stands for "the way" but also "the art of painting".
Sumi-E paper was specially developed for Japanese painting techniques. It is thin but nonetheless absorbant and allows water to flow as ink, whereby both sharp edges as well as soft drawings are possible. In addition, the paper shows the texture of brush strokes very clearly.
