Moleskine is the legendary notebook of artists and intellectuals from the last two centuries: from Van Gogh to Picasso and Ernest Hemingway to Bruce Chatwin – a handy, dependable travel companion for sketches, notes, stories and impressions before they eventually become famous drawings or pages of beloved books.
Moleskine was originally produced by small French concerns, which delivered them to the Paris stationery stores that were frequented by the international avant-garde. Towards the end of the last century it was impossible to find any more: the last producer, a family firm in Tours, closed its doors in 1986. ’Le vrai Moleskine n’est plus’ was the lament of the businesslike owner of the stationery operation in the Rue de l’Ancienne Comédie where Chatwin normally stocked up on books. The English author had ordered a hundred notebooks before his trip to Australia: he bought all the Moleskine notebooks that he could find but it still was not enough.
In 1998 a small publishing house in Milan brought the Moleskine notebook back on the market. And so it was that this anonymous witness to a remarkable tradition started out on a new trip. Capturing emotional reality, immortalizing passing details and putting down on paper the rush of unique experiences - the Moleskine line collects ideas and emotions whose energy is eventually released with the passage of time.
The legendary notebook returns in order to wander from one pocket to another and accompanies, with its multifarious page layouts, the creative professions and the entire world of ideas that puts its stamp on our times. The Moleskine adventure continues and the next sequel will be told on its still empty pages. In the case of the larger Moleskine Folio notebooks in sizes A4 and A3 those pages will even be FSC certified!
