In mold making, silicone oil is added to the mixture of addition- or condensation-cured silicone in order to lower the viscosity of the uncured state and to make the end product softer by reducing the Shore hardness. This result is often used with malleable silicone rubber to make it easier to shape and handle.
However, if too much silicone oil is added, the mechanical properties of the mold is reduced, e.g. the elongation at break. The manufacturer recommends a maximum addition of 3-5% silicone oil, measured in terms of the total amount of silicone mold. We recommend test casts to determine the optimal mixing ratio.
For serial casting, the oil is used to regenerate silicone molds when molding with aggressive media. Maintaining the surface with silicone oil extends the durability of the mold and protects it from becoming brittle.
In addition, silicone oil is used as a lubricant in the workshop (e.g., for chains, gears, and sewing machines). Due to its water-repellent properties, the oil is an effective impregnating agent for tarpaulins and tents. When working with silicone oil, observe the usual precautions when handling chemicals.
